M818 (ex --) THE PASSAGE OVER ŠIKOVAC

This is an attractive linear tour passing over the south ridge of Mount Učka from the direction of the sea towards Istria's hinterland. The upper parts of Šikovac can be quite demanding because they are very rocky and exposed to heavy winds. Therefore it is highly recommended to avoid this route in case of heavy wind or when the rocks are wet or frozen. The abbreviation PP is short for mountain trail whereas the abbreviation IPP denotes Istrian mountain trail. If you are planning to embark on this hike, we recommend you to use the 1:25000 hiking map of Ćićarija issued by HGSS in 2015.

The trail starts in Brseč, at the bus station on the east side of the D66 State Road. The trail follows PP 720; it briefly runs southwards along pavement before crossing the road. The trail then ascends through the village of Carići and then proceeds to (x) PP located just below Provrtenica (a natural opening in a rock). Turn right onto PP 700-IPP and follow the trail until reaching the peak of Šikovac rising 780 meters above sea level (box, log book and stamp). The trail then descends to the rest stop (table, benches) and takes you across a smaller ridge all the way to the notch of Prodol. At (x) the trail turns left and follows PP 715 along a winding downhill path. At the (x) beneath the castle in Kožljak the trail makes another left turn, this time onto PP 716. After some 700 m, the trail turns right onto PP 717 which crosses the railway and reaches the school and the playground in Kožljak, where this tour comes to an end.
